In the first round held in October, George took the lead with 43.83% of the votes, while Boakai got 43.44%  to move on to the run-off. There were 18 other candidates.

The run-off between the two main challengers was triggered after neither candidate received 50% of the votes in the first round to clinch an outright victory. Boakai received endorsements from the candidates in the run-off, particularly those who finished third, fourth and fifth.

George Weah conceded election defeat to Boakai in the tight run-off election a few hours before the final results were announced.

This election was  Boakai’s second run for the top job. The two competed in the second run-off in the 2017 election, in which Boakai trailed Weah in the first round. George received 62 per cent of the vote in the 2017 run-off.
