Francis Ogolla was the Kenyan Chief of Defense Forces. He died on 18 April 2024 while in the line of duty after the chopper they were traveling in crashed in Elgeyo Marakwet and burst into flames. He served in the military for over 40 years, having worked in different divisions in the Kenya Air Forces.

General Francis Ogolla left Nairobi on 18 April 2024 to visit troops in the North Rift region of the country and to inspect ongoing school renovations. The chopper he was traveling with had just taken off from a local primary school when it went down and burst into flames killing nine other senior KDF officers. Francis Ogolla biography

Francis Ogolla was born on 12 February 1962 in Ng’iya, Siaya County. He is the son of Mzee Joel Oyeyo. He has a brother named Canon Hezekiah Oduor and an elder sister, Peres Anyango.

Gen Francis Ogolla is a graduate of ÉcoleMilitaire de Paris and the National Defence College of Kenya. He has a diploma in International Studies and Military Science from Egerton University. He is also an alumnus of the University of Nairobi. Ogolla studied Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Armed Conflict and Peace Studies (First Class Honors), and a Masters of Arts in International Studies from the the institution.

Career

Francis Omondi Ogolla joined the Kenya Defence Forces in April 1984 and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in May 1985. He was posted to Kenya Air Force. CDF Francis Ogolla trained as a fighter pilot with the USAF and as an instructor pilot at the Kenya Air Force (KAF). Additionally, he trained in other fields including imagery intelligence and counter-terrorism

The fallen soldier rose through the ranks to become a Major General and was appointed the Commander of Kenya Air Force in July 2018. He served in this position for over three years. At 60 he was promoted to a four-star General and appointed Chief of Defense Forces by President Ruto on 28 April 2023. He took over from General Robert Kibochi who left the office after attaining the mandatory exit age of 62.

Before his appointment, General Francis was the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces. He also served in various appointments, including Base Commander at Laikipia Air Base, Chief Flying Instructor at Kenya Air Force Flying Training School, Operations Desk Officer at Kenya Air Force Headquarters, and Commanding Officer of the Tactical Fighter Wing.

Ogolla will be buried in Ng’iya, Alego Usonga on Sunday 21 April 2024. According to Francis Ogolla’s family, the late soldier had indicated his burial instructions in a will. One of the instructions he left behind was that he should be buried 72 hours after his death.

The decision to be buried on Sunday was his wish. He had informed the family that upon his demise he be buried in 72 hours in a simple ceremony.

Major Francis Ogolla was expected to attend the St. Thomas Nduru Anglican Church consecration on the same day. He said to have helped build the church. He was also expected to join his family on Saturday 20 April to celebrate his father’s 100th birthday.
